Mark Newman is an Irish contemporary jeweller and goldsmith based in Glasgow, Scotland. His practice brings together traditional craftsmanship, digital aesthetics and research into neuroscience and cognition.

Living with aphantasia, the inability to form mental images, Newman has developed a design process that replaces conventional visualisation with systems of logic, proportion and mathematical structure. Rather than beginning with a mental image of a finished object, he constructs practical algorithms using information such as scale, ratio, pattern and the dimensions of gemstones. These systems become a framework through which each piece gradually takes form.

His work draws visual inspiration from the functional structures that organise the world around us, from architecture and civil engineering to circuitry, grids and systems of movement. These references are reduced and reconstructed into intricate geometric forms that explore ideas surrounding hierarchy, value, status and the objects society chooses to assign meaning to.

Central to his current practice is the Matrix series, which reinterprets the historic signet ring through complex architectural structures, custom-cut gemstones and 18ct yellow, white and rose gold. Each piece combines a highly controlled design system with extensive hand fabrication, drawing together wire work, soldering, laser welding, stone setting and traditional goldsmithing techniques.

Newman's work has been exhibited internationally at Collect, Somerset House, Goldsmiths' Fair, London, and in galleries and exhibitions throughout Ireland, the UK and Europe. He is a two-time winner of the RDS Craft Awards, receiving the award in 2020 and again in 2025, and has received multiple awards from the Goldsmiths' Craft & Design Council. His work is included in the Michelangelo Foundation's Homo Faber Guide, and he is a member of Design-Nation and the Society of Designer Craftsmen.

Alongside his jewellery practice, Newman works as an educator and welcomes private commissions, creating bespoke pieces that bring his distinctive design language to individual stories and ideas.
